Windscreen Coating Test: Application

by Kentangcf

6 way water repellent windscreen coating test !! Wolf’s Chemicals Glass Guard, Aquapel, GTechniq G1, Optimum Opti-Coat, Rain-X and Permanon Supershine.

Rain-X has always been the dominant water repellent product for windscreens. It repels water just as good as the more expensive ones, so…what’s the diff?

For one, it is not as long lasting, however I was able to get a maximum of 8 months out of Rain-X from the front windscreen, of course this is with minimal wiper usage and with the occasional sprays of Meguiar’s Ultimate Quik Detailer.

Then, I was given a sample of Rainaway, a german tech nano windscreen coating. Since the date of my initial impression, it has been 1 year and 8 months. On the rear window, the Rain-X side has accumulated water spots whereas the Rainaway side has little to no waterspots. So this expensive and premium windscreen coating is not a BS product after all! Rainaway on the front screen, I have been able to get about 1 year durability from it, although the water repellency was slightly weaker during the last few months.

So now I’m back with a 6-way windscreen coating test.

I first started by cleaning the glass with a Lake Country glass polishing pad with Glass Science’s Glass Scrub.

However, I think I was polishing it a bit too wet and the pad was just hydroplaning across the glass without doing any polishing at all.

So I had to resort to using Rainaway’s watermark remover powder and a 3M Ultrafine Softback Sanding Sponge. The way to use this is to scrub until you see it is not being repelled and the whitish residue is flat on the glass.

After a rinse, water is totally flat on the glass, indicating that there are no oils or coating on the glass.

I did not scrub enough near the edge, and you can see the water being repelled.

Now, let’s introduce the contenders!

First up, wolf’s chemicals glass guard, a nano glass sealant. A new brand from Hungary but have been impressing many detailers on Detailing World and even Polished Bliss is carrying their line, it has to be worth a shot trying.

Aquapel, a well-known product from the U.S.A and have won over many users for it’s durability.

GTechniq G1 Clear Vision, great repellency and from one of my favourite brands!

Optimum Opti-Coat, what’s a paint coating doing here? This coating has been claimed to be applicable on many exterior vehicle surfaces. For paint, glass and even plastic trim. I’m curious to see if it can contend with dedicated windscreen coatings.

Rain-X, ’nuff said.

Permanon Supershine, a German product which is based on monomolecular silicium technology. It claims that it can also be applied to a variety of surfaces, it will fill the capillaries of the surface, forming a layer of ‘glass’ protection. That’s not it’s party piece, it excels at it’s method of application, just spray on a wet or dry surface, spread, and rinse/wipe off. The surface is now coated with silicium. This product is also similar to GTechniq’s C2 Liquid Crystal, the difference seems to be only their colour. It’s water repellency properties make it suitable for windscreen application, so let’s see how this super easy to use product will compare to the big guns.

So all coatings were applied and left to dry for about 2 hours. Opti-Coat was wiped off after 2 mins.

Aquapel was only used for that area, when the single use applicator is meant to do a large front windscreen and more. Hence, the overly wet application.

GTechniq G1 and Wolf’s Chemicals Glass Guard feels similar in terms of application, they go on wet, and as you spread, they will start to feel sticky and grabby. I used a glass cleaner to removed both, G1 was harder to removed and required more glass cleaner, is this an indication of stronger durability?

Permanon Supershine was applied neat with a cotton pad, I wanted to get the maximum durability out of this product.

Wipers were cleaned with some all purpose cleaner, wiped dry and coated with a wiper coating to reduce friction between the wiper’s rubber blades and the glass, hence, reducing chatter.

Check out the video below to see the water repellency behaviour of each coating. This test will probably go on for some time since glass products tend to last longer than products for paint.

Well, thanks for looking! Would appreciate if any users of the coatings above can share their experience in the comments below.

Ken, can describe why G1 is the winner? How does the coatings fare with wiper usage?

      • Jan 31 2012

G1 is the winner in terms of durability against wipers. Most of the coatings still repel water on areas where wipers can’t reach, we don’t need the expensive products for these areas, even cheapo RainX does the job. But where the wiper blade reaches is where the coatings are being tested.
G1 still repelling the best among all the coatings, although have slowed down when compared to freshly applied.

Hey Kenneth interesting experiment! However Ive got a little question. How does the wiper react to the coatings? Last time some road side fellows sprayed a little “substances” on my windscreen showing to me that it does repel water trying to sell me their product, but when i turn on the wiper it started to squeak and have weird sounds, does any of this product have this kind of issue?

    • Aug 5 2012

      Hi TC,

This is a common problem with windscreen coatings, but I have a wiper coating that prevents this effect and makes the wiper wipe smoothly. It depends if they have this chemical or not.
